Home Remodeling Ideas - Think Outside the Box

To save money in home remodeling and redecorating it is essential to think outside the box. Thinking outside the box will give you new choices and present new approaches to remodeling issues. A plan, a budget, and an open mind to new ideas are essential to this approach.

The first thing to keep in mind is the reason for the remodeling or redecorating. Is it to create a needed space or to change the look of an existing room? Function and purpose should be considered next. How will the room be utilized best? Next, be willing to work with the existing layout to save money; however, consider converting a closet into a much-needed office, or a large walk in closet into a nursery. Consider eliminating a dining room that is not used much and converting it into a family room or office. Turn a formal living room into a room all the members of the family can enjoy, if you do not entertain formally.

Consider multi-function furniture, or furniture that will double in purpose/use. You can easily convert a den into a guest unit by using a sofa bed, a storage trunk to keep linens and serve as a table, and an armoire that will double as closet space and storage space.

In addition, you can use a dining room as an office or project room. Use a long table that will double as a desk when not used as a dining table. Use an armoire with two sides - one side to store china and the other to store office supplies. Furniture style filing cabinets can double as extra storage for office and linens.

Use items for storage that can also have a decorative purpose such as ottoman with a storage compartment to store table games or throws, and decorative jars to store smaller items. Repurpose a medicine cabinet by attaching a picture at the front - You will have wall décor and added storage. No one will know that it is not a hanging picture in your wall.

Consider using your laundry room for another purpose and including a washer and drier in the kitchen, reface the fronts to hide the appliances. No one will know that your washer and drier are in there and you will have gained another room.

Get rid of your dining table and install a corner-dining unit in the kitchen if you have the space. They are comfortable, and have storage space under the seats. If you don't use your dining room much you will gain an extra room to use as needed.

These are just a few outside the box ideas when remodeling or redecorating your home.
